Chair/Professor, Department of Physics
At Andrews University, the Department of Physics offers an interdisciplinary masters program MS: Mathematics and Science in collaboration with the Departments of Biology, Chemistry, and Mathematics . This course of study can be and has been configured to the specific needs of physics teachers. We also offer a BS in Physics, a BS in Physics Education as well as a Physics Minor that are approved by the State of Michigan for secondary teaching certification.
This year we are offering a lab enhancement program, SmartLabs, as a series of 4-6, one-day in-service experiences throughout the schoolyear. Each in-service will focus on relevant material for the upcoming quarter.
In the past, we offered SmartLabs as a summer intensive program for teachers, 4 years running . Our entire faculty put on a week of labs and demonstrations along with a daily hour of lecture content, with an option for graduate credit. Each teacher participant brought a student with them as an assistant. Some teachers stay on for another 2 weeks, during which one of our faculty presents a 3-credit graduate course Topics in Teaching Physics.
